This first installment of a two part series focuses on eaves that do not return onto the gable.
Gable roof eave detail.
The final step is putting the roof on the eave and addressing what happens in the gable itself.
The main component of any eaves detail is the rafter tail the part of the rafter that extends beyond the exterior wall.
In contrast a gable or rake is the overhang of a building that occurs on the side that is topped by a gable roof.
Most gable roofs also have a rake cornice or rake extension formed on the gable ends.
Boxed eave detail works for both hip and gable roofs.
The three primary variables to consider when designing the eaves for a gable roof are the width of the gable trim the projection of the eaves and the details at the corner of the gable ends.
Many different designs can be created by variations in roof pitch gable end treatment mouldings and dimensions.
Typically the same detail throughout the country typical eave section gable end elevation b.
An eave is defined as the edge of the roof that overhangs the face of a wall.
This is created by extending the rafters out past the building ends.
The 12 12 roof pitch is also known as a square pitch roof since a 90 degree angle is formed at the peak of such roofs.
To determine exactly what the rafter tail will look like i always make a full size drawing on a scrap of plywood of all the eaves elements including framing and finish materials see illustration above.
Roof drip edge flashing at roof eaves gable ends roof drip edge flashing serves multiple functions on a building the foremost of which is to assist water in leaving the roof edge with minimum damage to other building components by directing the water off of the roof and into the gutter.
Do not set it to match the main roof slope of the house.
Remember the roof on the return is there just to shed a small amount of water.
A slight return just enough to keep water from pooling is all you need.
This is the portion of the roof that protrudes beyond the side of a house or building.
If a sprocketted or bell cast detail is used then eaves courses should be no lower than the minimum recommended roof pitch.
If running trim is going to be used.
Running trim can be used along the eaves of your gable either below a gable decoration or by themselves.
